Oommen Chandy, a prominent member of the Congress who twice held the office of chief minister of Kerala, passed away early on Tuesday in Bengaluru, according to his family. He was 79 years old. The former chief minister of Kerala passed away, according to a Facebook post by his son Chandy Oommen. His spouse Mariamma, together with their offspring Maria Oommen, Chandy Oommen, and Achu Oommen, survive him.

Oommen simply stated on his Facebook page, “Appa has passed away.” As a tribute to the late former chief minister, the state administration has declared today a holiday and two days of mourning. All of the exams scheduled for July 18 have likewise been cancelled by the Mahatma Gandhi University.

According to sources within the Congress, the former CM passed away while receiving cancer treatment at a private hospital at 4.25 am. Chandy, who had been experiencing health issues for a while, was receiving treatment in Bengaluru.

Oommen Chandy was Kerala’s chief minister twice for a combined seven years, from 2004 to 2006 and subsequently from 2011 to 2016.

In addition, Chandy held the ministerial positions of Home (28 December 1981–17 March 1982), Labour (11 April 1977–25 April 1977 and 27 April 1977–27 October 1978), and Finance (2 July 1991–22 June 1994) in a number of governments led by K Karunakaran and A K Antony. In the Kerala Assembly, he also held the office of opposition leader.

Chandy set the record for the longest term as an MLA by representing the Puthuppally electorate in the Kottayam district for more than 50 years.
