Oommen Chandy, a former chief minister of Kerala, passed away early on Tuesday at the age of 79. According to reports, the senior Congress politician passed away at 4:25 am in a private hospital in Bengaluru while receiving cancer treatment. A public holiday and two days of mourning have been declared for Tuesday by the Keralan government as a tribute to the late chief minister.

Many political leaders have expressed their condolences in response to Chandy’s passing. While Congress general secretary KC Venugopal paid a visit to the Chinmaya Mission Hospital in Bengaluru, where the former Chief Minister passed away this morning, senior Congress figures like Mallikarjun Kharge, Priyanka Gandhi, and Shashi Tharoor expressed their condolences.

In a tweet posted on Tuesday, Prime Minister Narendra Modi expressed his condolences for the loss of the former chief minister of Kerala, writing, “In the passing of Shri Oommen Chandy Ji, we have lost a modest and committed man who devoted his life to public service and toiled towards the prosperity of Kerala. I remember our encounters over the years, especially when we were both the Chief Ministers of our respective states and then subsequently when I arrived to Delhi. In this tragic hour, my thoughts are with his family and friends. May he rest in peace, his soul.

Congress President Mallikarjun Kharge paid tribute to Chandy on Twitter, writing, “My humble tribute to the stalwart Oommen Chandy, Former Kerala Chief Minister and a committed Congress man who stood strong as a leader of the public. The advancement of Kerala and the political climate of the country were forever changed by his steadfast dedication and innovative leadership. He will be cherished for his commitment to and assistance to the populace. Sincere sympathies to the family and friends of the victim.

Deepest condolences to the family of Shri Oommen Chandy, wrote Congress general secretary Priyanka Gandhi Vadra in a tweet about Chandy’s passing. On Twitter, former Congress politician Kapil Sibal expressed his sorrow over the passing of a “dear friend,” writing, “Oommen Chandy passes away.” He was deeply ingrained in the culture of the Congress and always put the needs of the people, particularly the underprivileged and marginalised, first. The senior Congressman’s passing, according to Indian Union Muslim League chairman E. T.
